INTERNET SAFETY
All parents and caregivers need to be well educated about technology and social media topics, and set very clear limits with children on those subjects. Places to start:
- Net Smartz has lots of resources & tips sheets in English and Spanish
- Connect Safely has resources & tips sheets in English & Spanish, and a Spanish option for the full site in the menu bar
- Your Brain on Porn is recommended by Certified Sex Offender Treatment Professional Tim Kahn addressing issues of youth viewing porn
- National Center on the Sexual Behavior of Youth lists many agencies providing advice on this topic
- Highline School District resources for youth and parents on digital & media literacy
- Online games that helps teach internet safety: Play Interland – Be Internet Awesome and FBI – SOS
- Missing Kids has instructions on how to ask different social media sites to remove content
- The Parents’ Corner at Welcome 2 Reality has online contracts for parents & youth, a guide to emojis and text abbreviations, & information on cyber-bullying
- Take it Down allows people to request removals of sexually explicit pictures taken before they were 18.
